		In contrast to the mastopexy (breast lift) which only removes the skin, the reduction mammaplasty (breast reduction) removes skin and underlying breast tissue. Breast reduction surgery is usually done to improve appearance and alleviate symptoms associated with large breasts and generally improve breast health. As with the lifts, the more tissue that is removed the more scarring that is necessary. These scars are on the lower surface of the breasts and are more accepted by patients that require this procedure. Breast reduction surgery is performed under general anesthesia.
