The most frequently performed cosmetic surgery procedure in many areas of the U.S.; breast augmentation can give women with small or unevenly sized breasts a fuller, firmer, better-proportioned look through the placement of implants in the breast. Women may elect to undergo breast augmentation for many different medical and aesthetic reasons, including symmetry and restoring breast size following pregnancy and breast feeding. The procedure may be combined with others such as a breast lift if the breasts are sagging.
Saline or silicone implants are placed underneath either breast tissue or the chest wall muscle depending on patient preference or anatomy. The procedure lasts one to two hours and is typically performed with general anesthesia, although "twilight" sleep may be possible. After surgery the patient’s bust line may be increased by one or more cup sizes.
Incision can be in armpit, under breast or areola.
The under breast incision is the only one that is often not seen with arms extended above the head.
